The You in Session

Many clients wonder:

“Am I doing therapy wrong?”

The truth is—you can’t.

If you’re showing up in whatever way you can—searching for meaning, healing, connection, or simply trying to understand yourself—you are already beginning doing the work.

In our sessions, my goal is for you to feel safe enough to tell your story. Our time together may be brief, but it can still be meaningful. I want you to leave with a little less fear, a little more hope, and greater compassion for yourself.

The you who shows up in session is the only you I see.

While many clients share common struggles, I want to understand your story within the context of your cultural, familial, relational, and environmental experiences. Your way of seeing the world, the challenges you've faced, and the strengths you've developed belong uniquely to you—and they matter to me.

What I often see beneath the struggles is something remarkably consistent: people brave enough to be here, hopeful enough to want something different, and willing to explore the possibility of growth and change.

Sometimes, you might wonder about me, too.

Who am I outside of this room? What is my life like? What are those books on my shelf? Why does my hair never seem quite “done”?

I wonder about that last one, too.

This kind of curiosity is natural. I know because I was once a curious therapy client myself.

In my twenties, I had an immensely helpful therapist. I often wondered why she seemed to have a long-standing cold. Was it allergies?

She would clutch her tea mug and offer profound insights through an orchestra of sneezes.

She was a lovely and effective psychologist with an unfortunate, perpetual pink nose. Her help was invaluable—and worth every penny I paid as a struggling new graduate.

I never suggested she try a neti pot.

Though I was tempted.

So, wonder away about your therapist outside of session—as many clients naturally do.

And my dear, you are not doing therapy wrong.

You don't have to arrive with the right words.

You don't have to know what to talk about.

You don't have to have an insight every week.

You don't have to make progress on anyone else's timeline.

You don't have to perform therapy for me.

You just have to bring yourself.

I don't always get things exactly right, and I fumble my words more often than I'd like. But I will sit with you. I will listen. And together, we can work to make the complexities of life feel a little more manageable.

The part of you that wonders whether you're doing this right may simply be the part of you that wants to heal.

That part of you is always welcome here.

At its best, therapy helps us come home to ourselves.

And the part of you that shows up in session is sacred, tender, and here to heal.

The Me from Across the Room,

Mandy
